Det Danske Luftfartselskab launched on August 1, 1946. AB Aero transport and Det Norske Luftfartselskap AS coordinated international flights to Scandinavia. On September 17, 1946, the work began. In 1948, the companies started working together to run their European businesses. In 1951, they merged to form what is now known as the SAS Consortium.
When the airline first started, it owned by SAS Denmark (28.6%), SAS Norge (28.6%), and SAS Sweden (42.8%). Each country owned 50% of the company and 50% of the government.
